This week, Vice President Kamala Harris made her first trip to Chicago since taking office, visiting a mass vaccination site for union workers on the city’s Near West Side.
President Joe Biden said all adults in the U.S. should be eligible for the coronavirus vaccine by April 19. Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the city will follow suit, making the COVID-19 vaccine available to all adults this month.
Approximately 20% of Chicagoans are fully vaccinated, while approximately 40% have gotten their first dose of the vaccine, Dr. Allison Arwady, the commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health, said during a news conference Tuesday.
In other city news, officials are responding to a string of shootings, including an apparent “road-rage” incident on Lake Shore Drive in which a 21-month-old boy was shot in the head.
Lightfoot called for a new policy on Chicago police foot pursuits after the fatal police shooting of 13-year-old Adam Toledo.
“Tragedies like these also underscore the urgency of reforming CPD’s foot pursuit policy, not tomorrow, but today,” the mayor said Monday at the New Life Church in Little Village. “Foot pursuits present a significant safety issue (for) officer safety, but also community safety, for the pursued and for bystanders.”
Meanwhile, Congress is gearing up for an infrastructure fight, and a new public official is reportedly facing federal investigation.
